Candleston Castle, Merthyr Mawr

Phase one of the works is now complete, on the project to preserve the ruins at Candleston Castle, Merthyr Mawr. The Castle is a 14th Century Fortified Manor House and is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Our breif was to consolidate the ruins and make the Building safe as it was in a poor state of repair.

Our first priority was to establish where all the fallen masonry had come from, as over the years visitors to the Castle have moved stone, so it all has to be photographed and recorded, cleaned and moved to stores on site.

After which we erected Scaffolding to remove ivy and vegitation from around window and door openings, reinstate these areas to make the masonry safe and build up the area around them. Then removal of remaining vegitation, rake out old lime mortar and repoint all stonework. Further work was identified and carried out in order to ensure the stability of some of the interior features. These actions taken together will stabilise the building and ensure that it not suffer further deterioration in the future.

We are delighted to have undertaken this project, as it used all the skills of our team, as well as saving such a Historical building for future generations to enjoy.
